How do you envision using IdeaScale primarily?

User Activity Stream

Ideas Posted

I had a great conversation with a client (actually potential) about extending IdeaScale to provide for a costing model for ideas. As is typical with most businesses - feedback and enhancements are not FREE - everything has a cost associated with it. Currently with IdeaScale we are not focusing on capturing either the cost (or value) of any particular idea.

On internal sites, this can be referenced as "Cost Savings" or "Revenue Generation" - Users (both who are posting ideas) as well as voting on them should be able to quantify the cost savings a particular idea will produce.

In some cases, only the idea author may be able to define the cost/value, and in other cases both idea authors as well as voters can define the cost/value for an idea.

One solution to this issue, is to come up with a Numeric (Enter $ Value) Custom Field on IdeaScale and use this as a model for reporting median values etc.

Hello -

You are receiving this email because you have participated (or logged into)
the IdeaScale feedback community at http://ideas.ideascale.com.

We are trying out a new process of releasing early access data (about
IdeaScale) to all the participants of the IdeaScale feedback community - We
usually post blog entries on our blog with updates (after features have gone
live.) This email is intended to give anyone interested in _upcoming_
features and possibly facilitate a discussion before these features are
released.

*XML Export of Data
*After our launch of the OpenGov initiative for the WhiteHouse, we've been
getting a lot of requests for FULL access to all the data that has been
collected under any particular site. In OpenGov initiatives, it definitely
makes sense. Furthermore we've also been contacted by a couple University of
Washington PHD students on getting access to the entire dataset so some
visualizations and clustering tools can be build upon the existing data.

Our current API Access limits the data to 50 rows - primarily for
performance reasons.

We'll be launching an XML export that is based on RSS 2.0 - and established
standard. We've been looking at ATOM and RSS2.0 - both I think could do the
job - since both of them support cusomized namespaces and extensions - which
will be required to represent all the data collected via. IdeaScale.

Here is a discussion thread on this:
http://ideas.ideascale.com/akira/dtd/21074-3339

*Search
*We plan on making the search box a universal item across all IdeaScale
sites. Currently this is a customizable Tag. We think, the best place to put
the Search is in the Universal Header (On Top above the logos's etc.) -
Thanks to Google, users expect search on any content site.

Furthermore, there has been a very healthy discussion around searching tags,
revised ideas, comments etc. We will be taking a crack at indexing all these
components and allowing for advanced search models to search different data
segments and blocks.

Thanks everyone for participating. If you feel these emails are increasing
SPAM to your inbox please reply back to me and I can take you off the list.

So - I think the first implementation here will be :

a) A Custom Field of type "Date" - Customers can call the field "Target/Release" whatever date.

b) Obviously the ability to filter/or sort where IdeaReport will be ;) - users can then sort or filter by that custom field.

vivek.bhaskaran 8 months ago
Options also include IntenseDebate?

But - since we dont have the comments anymore, we wont be able to do comment consolidation? (comments + Votes) - one of the customers asked to see a visual representation (vote up or down) on the comment itself.

So - use case is - User Votes, and then comments. The comment should be flagged with the vote...

of course 1) is easy. 2) is hard (er) ;)

We'll get to them.
vivek.bhaskaran 8 months ago
Would the use case be to present am idea report (comprehensive) to superiors etc..

Wondering if this needs to be in excel or PDF.
vivek.bhaskaran 8 months ago
Hmm - User error. We moved some of the high rateed ideas and then deleted the category from the old portal (which of course deleted the data) - I am sure we have all the data in a backup - will try and resurrect..
vivek.bhaskaran 8 months ago
Hmm - wierd - What is your IS Site that you having to login repeatedly???
vivek.bhaskaran 8 months ago
Hey - we've done a "partial" implemntation here. If you hover over the # of Votes - it'll display the "Last Activity" --

We'll put together more documentation on how we define activity soon - nutshell -

Idea Creation, Revisions, Comments and Voting update the activity timestamp.

Are you talking about ideascale.com or one of your community sites?

If it is IdeaScale.com we can;t enable permanent cookies since we have Credit Card information - It's simply more risk (of fraud/chargebacks) for us.

If it is one of your portals/sites they should be cookied for longer than the session - something like 3 month I think.
vivek.bhaskaran 8 months ago
Yep - I was going to suggest what "Mr S" was talking

- BTW - Mr. "S" can I bribe you to change your handle (username/etc.) to something more easily addressable ;)

This is an easy one - we can get it done...

OK - found the issue - Was able to reproduce this with Safari - Both Chrome and Safari use Webkit...

We know this issue. Will get it fixed ASAP

@ Mr. S

We are getting into some serious "Process Modeling" here with these models. While these models make sense, it also increases the complexity of IdeaScale - while this is not a bad idea, it also means a lot of users who need a simple easy-to-use/understand tool get turned off.

I am not saying this is necessarily a bad idea - simply that complexity can overwhelm us and kill us in the longer run - Given what we charge for IdeaScale - the additional complexity from a business standpoint may not make too much sense.

Hmm - I think this is an issue with your Browser Client (not evaluating JS - ) what OS/Browser/Version are you using?

Hmm - we need to think about this a little more. I understand your issue. Give us a few days - lets see what we can come up with.
vivek.bhaskaran 9 months ago
Yes - we are planning on having the search on the global header (across the board) - It's simply too important a feature - we'll be updating the global header soon and that will incorporate out new search system - and also much of what we've brainstormed and discussed before...

Looking into ATOM - XML Format + Extensions for IdeaScale.

The current plan is to have the site admin have a config setting so that an XML dump will be generated on a weekly basis and posted for download.

The XML Dump will have the IP address and the source email anonymized - Basically an MD5 hash with a throw away key for both these pieces of data.

The file can then be parsed/read by any ATOM Library...
vivek.bhaskaran 9 months ago
Hey - you can use the @Import CSS call within the IdeaScale CSS to call out your own CSS files...
vivek.bhaskaran 9 months ago
Why should'nt the moderator activity reset the last activity? If truly something is going on with the idea (internally) then should'nt the timestamp be affected?

OK - I am being selfish here - It'll be relatively easy to add the functionality for Last_Update_Timestamp on the idea (if we do NOT have to exclude moderator activity) ;)

Tables Vs. Divs - We've fought this battle for A LONG time - My only issue here is - IE6 - Period. IE6 handles CSS _very_ poorly.

40% of users out there still use IE6.

If we moved to to DIV/CSS only model, that would mean infinite more testing (for both us and the template creators)

We actually _used_ to have the IS Default template in DiV+CSS - we simply could not keep goign back and forth with the IE+CSS issues + Firefox - X-Browser compatibility is higher in priority than best practice...

Greg - The OSTP/NAPA _does_ have access to all the data (dump) - they technically are our customers and it's really up to them to share that (or not.) They can provide the data, comments etc. in any format they want and host it on their own site etc.

Moreover, API's are generally used NOT for data dumps - more for ongoing access.

An argument can be made to have pagination, but then we'll need to have infrastructure for rate limits to prevent bots from overloading the system.

The API as we said earlier is in very early stages and we are definitely open to figuring out a way that does not kill us, yet keeps things as open as we can.
vivek.bhaskaran 9 months ago
At this point, I think we'll limit the result size to 50. Since we are not rate-limiting requests, this has a potential to overload our system (someone writing a simple batch job to repeatedly download all the ideas etc.) - In fact we may even dial down the page size to less than 50 if we think it is affecting performance.

Another option for you to get all the data is to pick it from the Global RSS feed...

Another update is that we'll changhing the NAME of the methods also tonight to make it easier for all:

These changes will go out over the weekend Friday May 29 - 2009

Ideas Related Methods:
ideascale.ideas.getTopIdeas
ideascale.ideas.getRecentIdeas

Tag Related Methods:
ideascale.tags.getTopTags

User Related Methods:
ideascale.users.getTopUsers

vivek.bhaskaran 9 months ago
Aha - thats definitely our mistake!

Couple of other updates:
We'll be adding a parameter categoryID - that will be the category filter.

We'll also be exposing the tags/tag cloud.

Currently the #of ideas is limited to 50 I think..for performance reasons.
vivek.bhaskaran 9 months ago
The only available method is ideascale.getTopIdeas

NOT

ideascale.getIdeas
